How to choose braces and how to care for them

Braces are the most common way of correcting the bite, as well as aesthetic problems with the teeth. In addition, this technique can prevent bite-related gastrointestinal disorders, speech problems, and periodontal disease. There are many types of braces available today, so patients can choose the options that are right for them in terms of price and features.
Varieties of braces
A bracket system is a structure consisting of plates attached to each tooth, an orthodontic arch and ligatures connecting the plates to the arch. According to the method of fixation, braces are divided into ligature and self-ligating. And if we talk about the material of manufacture, there are 4 types of systems:
- Metal ones are the least expensive, highly effective, but visible on the teeth.
- Plastic ones are less durable and the cost is higher due to cosmetic effect.
- Ceramic ones are durable and close to the color of tooth enamel.
- Sapphire ones are the most expensive and are virtually invisible.
A separate category includes removable braces, which are used to fix the result obtained. These are mouth guards, trainers and eliners.
The braces installation process
Installation of a brace system can be done in one of two ways. The direct method involves attaching the plate to each tooth by hand. To do this, orthodontic cement is applied to the teeth, providing a secure bond to the surface. A lamp is used to illuminate the material, after which the plate and the tooth become one.
There is another method – indirect, in which the installation of braces in the required position is carried out on a plaster model. Then it is transferred to an individual mouth guard. This method is more optimal for the patient, because the procedure takes much less time.
Braces care and duration of wear
In order for braces to last a long time and teeth to avoid tooth decay during treatment, you need to follow some rules:
- Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Use a rinse after meals.
